Tyler Stout
For my artist essay I have chosen Tyler Stout out of various artists as I like the comic book look of his movie posters, I will talk about his body of work, his education and use interviews with Tyler Stout about his work and his current and ex employmentt.
Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair:
This is a good example of his work using bleak colours like the red, yellow and black, The layout of the poster shows how gory, and action filled the ,movie is which is always good to show of the action packed film.
His works, such as this example are world renowned for their detail and style.
His style on all posters seem to match the styles of the early drawn anime such as Akira, he also did the movie poster for this film. The colours that are unsaturated and bleak tend to be used in early animes too.K
Kill Bill: The whole bloody affair, Akira and all his other work can be found at: http://tstout.com/
Tyler Stout: They usually come to me with a film they’d like a poster for, and I can either say yes or pass. If I decide it’s a movie I can do a poster for, then I just do whatever I think would look cool, they give me complete freedom to do whatever.
GoMediaZine: Has the Alamo changed your life? Do you do any other film poster work as a result?
Tyler Stout: It has indeed changed my life, or certainly my career. I am able to do posters much more full time, though I still do quite a bit of freelance illustration/design stuff. It has brought me a lot of exposure and people interested in buying stuff from me. Plus I did the theatrical poster for Hell Ride, so that was nice. I’ve had a few other film offers, but it’s really hard to do a poster for a film you haven’t seen yet. It’s hard for me, not everyone I suppose.”
Tyler Stout then goes on to talk about Alamo Drafthouse, also about the copyrights of an existing film and All City Media’s new gallery which he is a part of this year:
“GoMediaZine: I noticed you’re also are part of All City Media‘s new gallery opening this year. I have a poster in the show as well as Oliver Barrett and Chris Comella from Go Media. Can you tell us about the poster you did for it and anything you know about the event?
Tyler Stout: Thank you for reminding me, ha ha. I do indeed have a poster in that show. I should get started on it, ha ha. Let’s see…the movie I’m doing it for…I can tell you it’s a movie I really enjoyed and came out much more recently, so not 1980′s like most of my film choices.
GoMediaZine: When doing a film poster based on an existing film, do you worry about copyright or getting in some sort of trouble? How do you handle this? Especially when you’re selling prints with the film’s titles and actors likenesses on it.
Tyler Stout: I actually mostly do all those through the Alamo, so they take care of all that, they have a longstanding relationship with a lot of people in Hollywood and get the rights / permission to make these promotional things, so that keeps me out of trouble. Same with the posters I do for bands, it’s all with the bands permission, otherwise I could get in trouble. The only stuff I put out on my own is mostly fantasy based sorta stuff, alien nature scenes or whatever.
Stout has used a continuing trend of unsaturated colours, which adds personally I think into an individual style and a great asthetic appeal. His poster also follow a scheme of being montages as in the examples above they are both montages which adds a really good rival/ arch nemisis feel.
Although Tyler went to college I could not find any information regarding where he got educated.
Before becoming a recognized movie poster artist, Stout had been a video clerk at ‘Moyer’s first stop video’ for 2 years before it was eventually was bought out by Blockbuster’s which he then worked, Tyler Stout said this transition into Blockbusters became more strict and it was dumbed down which he personally quoted as being “less cool”.
Stout doesn’t only do posters for movies, he covers many famous bands some being, new Zealand band Flight of the Conchords,Blitzen Trapper and Dinosaur JR.
My summary:
I really like Tyler Stout’s work, as its old anime style projects really well onto a montage movie poster. I like the style as a bleak colour used in this way adds a really detailed and sketched style. My personal favourite has to be Kill Bill The Whole Bloody Affair poster, be cause for the style of film he incorporated an old Japanese art and design style which I believe it is unique, aesthetically pleasing and very cool. His whole body of work is amazing.
Tyler stout works for a company called Alamo Drafthouse, they allow him to do whatever he wants when they offer him to do a poster he has great freedom. He creates his work by what he thinks looks cool, like most the unsaturated style of his posters is both unique and looks amazing.
He said in an interview with GoMediaZine:
“GoMediaZine: How does a typical project with the Alamo Theatre work? Do you choose a film and create a poster based on your own concept? Or does the Alamo give any direction?Tyler Stout: They usually come to me with a film they’d like a poster for, and I can either say yes or pass. If I decide it’s a movie I can do a poster for, then I just do whatever I think would look cool, they give me complete freedom to do whatever.
